Why Do My Glands Swell After Drinking

Christine's Secret. John Banville with the pseudonym Benjamin Black. " Alfaguara. Notes

John Banville published her first novel. The prose is not the same meticulous craftsmanship built with skill and precision of Mephisto , for example, but Banville's art remains. About all the delicious slowness with which you draw the scenes, interlacing and showing the characters in action. This time also displayed some looks here and there, suggesting the plot. Two examples: "The porter laughed again, with a forced laugh, out of breath. Quirke abruptly walked away. Coming down the stairs felt the nerves in his back eyes suddenly serious with the guy following him very closely. What I did not feel was another melancholy look, yet it from a lighted window five floors above, where some vague silhouettes, festive, followed errands, drinking a firm footing. " And later, after describing a scene of marital bliss: "Kissing, not seen in a window on the lower floor of the house a face with thin lips, eyes that looked cold." Banville himself has said, explaining the name change: "Benjamin Black likes to tell a story and do not care too much style, something that John Banville, however, concerned themselves very much." But one thing that makes this book a remarkable work is just the style. After all, what the nickname seems silly, because the editors and the author have been charged since the beginning who is behind it. The translation of the title seems a bad choice. The novel is called Christine Falls , beautiful name and, as noted Quirke over the body of the girl, very telling: "... Christine falls ... And while you're down: the name you sit like a glove." Was not this a clear enough warning to translators and publishers? .
